Immigration Physical

Immigration Physical

An immigration physical is also known as an immigration medical examination or medical check-up.An immigration physical is a medical examination required by the Immigration Services (USCIS) for individuals seeking immigration benefits, such as adjustment of status, permanent residency (green card), or certain types of visas. The purpose of the immigration physical is to ensure that the applicant is free of health conditions that would pose a public health risk or make them inadmissible to the United States under immigration law. These examinations ensure that the applicant meets the health-related eligibility criteria for immigration and does not pose a health risk.

Applicants undergo the immigration physical with a physician authorized by USCIS to perform the examination. Failure to complete the required medical examination and submit the necessary documentation can result in delays or denial of the immigration application.

What does an immigration exam cover?

An immigration exam cover may differ slightly depending on factors such as the applicant’s age, medical history, and the specific immigration benefits they are seeking.Common elements of the immigration medical exam include:

  1. Medical History Review:You provide information about your medical history, including past and present illnesses, surgeries, hospitalizations, and any medications you are currently taking.
  2. Physical Examination:We conduct a thorough physical examination to assess the applicant’s health. This examination includes height, weight, blood pressure, and visual acuity.
  3. Vaccination Assessment: The applicant’s vaccination history is reviewed to ensure compliance with U.S. vaccination requirements. Vaccinations may include measles, mumps, rubella, polio, tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, influenza, hepatitis B, and varicella (chickenpox). If the applicant is missing any required vaccinations, they may receive them as part of the immigration medical examination.
  4. Tuberculosis (TB) Screening: Applicants are generally required to undergo screening for tuberculosis (TB) to check for active or latent TB infection. This screening may involve a chest X-ray and/or tuberculin skin test (TB).
  5. Serologic Testing: Depending on the applicant’s age and medical history, they may be required to undergo serologic testing for infectious diseases, such as syphilis or HIV/AIDS.
  6. Mental Health Evaluation: While not always required, applicants may undergo a mental health evaluation if there are concerns about mental health or if there is a history of psychiatric disorders.
  7. Completion of Form I-693: The results of the immigration medical examination are documented on Form I-693, Report of Medical Examination and Vaccination Record. This form is sealed and submitted to USCIS by the applicant as part of their immigration application.

All green card applicants are required to have the following vaccines before they become permanent residents:

  • Mumps, measles, rubella
  • Polio
  • Tetanus and diphtheria toxoids
  • Pertussis
  • Hemophilus influenza type B
  • Hepatitis A
  • Hepatitis B
  • Varicella
  • Influenza
  • Pneumococcal pneumonia
  • Rotavirus
  • Meningococcal

One may be excluded from some vaccines based on their medical history. Bring your vaccination record to your exam, additionally,if you have not received all the required vaccines, we can administer the missing ones.

Can my green card be denied for medical reasons?

Yes, a green card application can be denied for medical reasons if the applicant has a medical condition that renders them inadmissible to the United States under immigration law. The medical grounds for inadmissibility are primarily concerned with communicable diseases of public health significance, such as tuberculosis (TB), syphilis, gonorrhea, and other infectious diseases.

If an applicant has a communicable disease, a physical or mental disorder that poses a threat to the safety of the applicant or others, they may be deemed medically inadmissible. In such cases, USCIS may deny the green card application or request additional medical documentation or waivers.

However, not all medical conditions will result in inadmissibility. Most medical conditions are not considered grounds for denial, especially if they can be managed with appropriate treatment or if the applicant qualifies for a waiver.

Additionally, applicants with medical conditions that would render them inadmissible are eligible to apply for a waiver of inadmissibility. Waivers are discretionary and may be granted if the applicant can demonstrate that granting the waiver would not pose a danger to public health or safety. There are compelling humanitarian or other reasons for granting the waiver.

Urgent Care and Physicals

A medical physical exam is an assessment of a patient’s overall health status. It begins with a review of the patient’s medical history, including any existing conditions, medications, and past surgeries. Followed by vital signs checking such as blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate, and temperature. Additionally, a thorough examination of various body systems, including the cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, and neurological systems follows.

Depending on the age, gender, and medical history, additional screenings such as blood tests, urinalysis, and imaging studies like X-rays and ultrasounds may be required.
